Here is a moodboard for numerous robots/Mechs. This moodboard shows a variation of robots and mechs from movies and video games. All of these robots and mechs are styled almost completely differently. I have chosen to look at robots and mechs from different genre of movies and video games such as survival, action and arcade. I have then showed some of my initial pieces of concept art and then the finished pieces (which have been created in photoshop) Here is the file. Robot Moodboard

City level design initial concept art (on paper) – Layton

Here is the original design for the city level in our game. I stuck very close to this original design when i was creating the final design for the game. However there are some slight differences. In the original piece I have made the street look more vandalized than the final product. I also added in more detail to my final product and changed the way the level looks slightly. I got my inspiration for this level design from the game “streets of rage”. I like the style and how free you are to move. This is what I first visioned the game to look like during the beginning of the assignment.Initial level design

The dictator concept art initial design (on paper) – Layton

Posted on Updated on

Here is the initial design for the final boss in the game, the Dictator. I got a lot of inspiration for the initial design from other games such as Jet-pack joyride and Halo 4. This original piece resembles the actual piece very closely. However there are some slight differences between the two designs. The main difference is the proportion of the design. The initial design was much thinner than the final outcome and had far less detail (as you would imagine as it is a sketch). Also the back accessory which resemble wings are smaller on the initial design. After i had created the initial design I decided to create a design for a “second form”. The initial second form design is very different from the final design for the second form. This is because the initial second form has humanoid legs and feet whilst the finished design had two spider-like legs. Also the initial second form design, just like the first form initial design, lacks in detail to that of the final outcome. The head is also bigger than the final outcomes head.  The initial dictator designs

On Tuesday i made two more sheets of concept art. one of these was of what i would like the fourth level of our game to look like, the other was a menu screen for our game. the fourth level is a futuristic looking base that will be white with lots of high rocks for the player to climb over and a lot of enemies to fight. the menu screen is based off of Bolb Emils design as it is a blob of green slime with sections for the choices you can make for example; save, load, settings and play. FMP- menu screen (concept) FMP- Level 4 design (concept)

Researching into Other existing 2D concept art – Layton

Posted on Updated on

Today I have conducted some research existing 2D concept artists. The first artists is someone on wordpress and they are making 2D concept but not specifically for gaming https://frenchbird.wordpress.com/. I have looked at this persons work and I like the strange twist she puts on her art style. A lot of her work is based on 2D art however there are some pieces which look like they have been created using polygons yet they are still 2D.mountain2

Here I have looked at some of the concept art work for the game “Pokemon Red”. I am going to be talking about the initial design for the title screen of the game. The initial design of the title screen looks very similar to that of the final product, however it looks like the designers of the game had taken some of the design away and made the end result less detailed. For example the initial design has a boarder around the screen which showcases some of the Pokemon featured within the game. Also the trainer was positioned differently and on the initial design he looked much more battle ready rather than the finished product whom looks slightly laid back. Here is what the initial design and final design look like in comparison to each other.

Level design 2 concept art – Layton

During this lesson I have created another piece of concept art for a level design. I started this design the same as the last one. By drawing a horizontal line slightly off center. I then drew two diagonal lines which connect at the top to represent a pyramid and across from the pyramid i drew a rectangular shape with curved edges with represents an army base. After that, drew in a dying palm tree near the middle of the screen which would act as an obstacle like object. However you can walk behind or in front of it. I then drew a rough circle near the top of the screen to represent a sun. I then added the players health and amount of pickups to the top left of the screen. I then started to add detail into the pyramid by creating a brick like pattern on it and I also added windows for detail onto the army base. I then added a small and large helipad which were holding a helicopter and a jet plan on the top of them. I then coloured in the scenery accordingly ( floor yellow for sand, pyramid darker yellow, army base green, etc). I then added a faint cloud in the top right of the screen for detail. I also then added in the army soldier models and the player model for extra detail and to show how it would look during combat ect. Level Design including models 2

This lesson I have been working on a piece of concept art for a level in the game (This was my original interpretation on what the game would look like). I started this level design by drawing a line just off center horizontally through the screen. After doing this I drew two more horizontal lines further down on the screen than the first one however these lines were very close to each other these lines would represent a pavement. I then started drawing the background, starting with a large curved line representing a hill and made some block rectangular shapes on the opposite side of the hill and these represent buildings. I then added some background scenery closer to the screen. I added two lamp posts one being turned on and the other being slightly damaged. After this I added the moon in the top left corner of the screen and began colouring the image. I then added in the players health and amount if pickups in the top left of the screen. after finishing all the background and HUD I added in some of the police models and the player model into the piece.Level Design including models

The Dictator 2nd and 3rd form – Layton

Posted on Updated on

Today I have been making the 2nd and 3rd forms of the Dictator. I started these pieces by making two new files and copy and pasting the current Dictator into one of the files. Then i disconnected the tire tread and wheels from the main body of the dictator and also removed its back accessory. After doing this I moved the wheels out of the way and drew on two spider like legs. I then edited the tires and placed them on the dictators back. I then added extra rocket launchers onto the model and that is the 2nd form. For the 3rd form I just duplicated the 2nd form and edited it slightly. I change the colour to a darker grey and changed the fuel canister on the flamethrower to look larger and i added some knee spikes. The dark greys and reds make this form look more menacing as you can see in the images. The Dictator Model 2The Dictator Model 3
